The small ring rims are/were commonly used on the 1/2 ton 4x4 WC series of military trucks. I know collectors who have used all manner of 9.00 x 16 tires on these rims, inluding bar tread NDT tires.
I have been in the military vehicle collecting hobby over 20 years and have NEVER heard of even an incident from using the 9.00 x 16 tires on the 1/2 ton WC wheel. In fact, that is how my 1/2 ton WC-22 is set up.
I would certainly like to hear first hand information of any problem with this set-up (other than higher center of gravity from taller tires causing rollovers, oops I used the 7.50 tubes with the 9.00 tires, I put a Hemi in my truck and went road racing, etc.).
