You also might want to remove the float needle holder. Todays nifty reformulated gas does a nice job of dissolving older rubber compounds in hoses etc. You might find little bits of rubber clogging the float needle body where the gas line meets the carb. Amazing how a fuel pump can pass crud that big. I replaced the flex hose from the frame to the fuel pump with some modern stuff that will take the alky in the gas.

I just drove my '48 for 40 miles at varying speeds. I usually leave the heat riser in the summer setting year round. I find that the carb base gets too hot with this stinking RFG gas in the winter position, and induces knock sometimes. The air temp is about 46 and rather humid here in Wisconsin. Perfect carb ice conditions. I got home and quickly pulled the air cleaner for a look see. No ice. The 10% alcohol in the gas is quite hygroscopic, and absorbs water like mad. Another reason not to waste money buying HEET.
