I'd bet that you've only broken an axle .
Pull out the axles, and you might find that one of them is missing the splined end that fits into the differential. Sometimes you can get the broken part out easily, though I've had to pull the differential out so I could work on it. I had to drill into the broken piece, tap it, and then thread a bolt into it to get enough of a bite to pull it out.
