There has been much discussion on this forum about preoiling the engine. If you assemble the engine dry, that should be done as you slowly rotate the engine. Don't know anyone that assembles engines dry. As long as you use assembly lube or a 50/50 mixture of oil and STP (my choice) you won't have a problem with engine wear at first start. Just cranking the engine to start it can generate 7 pounds of oil pressure before it starts, so it gets additional lube before the engine actually starts.

The use of non-detergent oil for the first 500 miles is to allow the slow removement of particles to prevent premature wear, then change the oil and switch to a detergent if that is what you prefer.

50/50 mixture works well enough to allow starting an engine for 6 or 7 times, allowing it to run for a few seconds each time, without premature wear - in case you have oil pump problems - personal experience.

I don't care how much prelubing you do, the one culpret to creating premature wear is GRIT. The block cylinder walls HAVE to be washed with soap and water to remove it, crank, if it has been turned, or you instantly have premature wear regardles of any prelubing measures you may have taken! The grit acts like sandpaper on new parts.

The break-in mentioned earlier is for cast iron rings. If you use chrome rings, double the break-in period.

I've rebuilt numerous engines using this method and acheive long engine life.
