That's interesting. I have a book by an early Alaskan Bush pilot by the name of Frank Barr. Standard operating procedures for him when he landed in some remote spot in Alaska in cold weather and had to stay the night was to immediately drain the oil out of the engine and bring it inside. Before starting out in the morning, he'd heat the oil good and hot on the stove and pour it back in. This helped pre-heat the engine.
