Stopping the fire from spreading, yes.
I was completely impressed with the fact that I was 10 feet from an explosion that destroyed 5,000 sq. ft. in less than 30 seconds, with temperatures of up to 1200 degrees. 5/8 drywall, installed properly works wonders. I was on the opposite of the wall, the building designed to withstand a 7.5 earthquake was rocked, I was nearly knocked to the floor, but the wall held.
