In most cases, you cannot run MIG off a homeowner type stick machine. You can however run MIG from an industrial stick machine, providing the MIG unit is designed to do so.

Cheap machines are generally crap and will spend the majority of their life sitting on a shelf collecting dust. Old machines are neither good or bad, they are technology of years gone by when weldors were skilled and respected. What I can do with one and what you can do with the same machine will differ greatly.

There are a few great mistakes in welding, the first being that the weld is made by the machine. A weldor can make a weld with a machine most people have a hard time melting a rod with. A beginner won't make a weld with a machine that costs $10,000, but he will make one hell of a mess.
