Depending on where you live and your application, you might not want a full drum of cable. If you are in a area with lots of trees for dead men you may be able to get by with less that a full drum of cable. Areas with sparse dead men, a full drum of cable may be needed.

You get maximum winch power on the first layer of cable. After that each additional layer greatly reduces winch pull.

As an example Braden HU8, 8000# winches are rated 8000# on the first layer, second layer
6700 and it drops with each additional layer.

So it may be in your interest to run less that a full drum, if your situation allows.

I only run approx 100 feet on my trucks, but have lots of dead men in the woods where i live and drive. Even with a double line pull, I have 50 feet, which in my needs is good.
