There are synthetics. Costly, can't handle dirt.

A friend in the elevator business is using more and more synthetics. The modern stuff has no stretch, so an elevator in those gazillion story tall buildings in Hing Kong and Quatar don't bounce up and down forever.

But it can't handle abrasives. Once dirt gets in between the fibers, it abrades them skinny little fibers, losing strength.

Let me know when you see any on a tow rig, or a construction crane.

I'd go for 1/2" with many wires- it's easier to handle. Stainless would be nice, galvy otherwise. Or plain steel, and pour some drain oil on it whenever you change oil.
