I agree, 2nd Gen auto tranny not that strong. Problem is, neither is the 3rd Gen.
My 2005 dually that I twin turbo'd, we decided that the auto would not like 600hp so before starting any engine mods, we pulled down my transmission with less than 1500 miles on it. All the thrust bearings were worn right to the brass...1500miles! The properly upgraded transmissions replace these with needle bearings but according to DTT transmissions, the Dodge autos even up to 2009...forget about reaching 150K miles on a stock tranny unless you never tow any trailer & drive like granny Walton.
Manual tranny is the ticket for towing but it's certainly a pain in the butt in the city.
