1998 12V is what you want. Most reliable, capable of the most power by far, strongest & cheapest for parts.
Injectors for the 98...$60ea. Injectors for the 3rd Gen.....you don't want to know.
When a 12V injector goes bad...you'll get a bit of smoke, a little short on power. #rd Gen...your piston will melt.
The only advantage a 3rd Gen has over a 12V is the noise factor & there's nothing that can be done to overcome that in a 12V.
24V...nothing really wrong with them, just more issues than the 12V. More moving parts for absolutely no reason.
Same engine, different head with more do dads going up & down. No where nearly as good of an injection pump...junk electric fuel pump.
6.7...terrible fuel economy. Limited aftermarket parts. Tons of smog crap controlled by the computer & prone to brake. Remove the exhaust & warranty voided.
So lets look at the equasion here...
1994-1998 12V $10K-ish
1999-2002 24V $12K-ish
2003-2007 3RD Gen $20K-ish
6.7 $35K-ish
I'd buy a 12V 1998 & take a nice holiday. Bring your computer with you & hunt down the best deal on a mint original WDX & buy it...it was free :)
That's my sermon for this beautiful Sunday morning boys
