There is also some safety concerns to be mentioned when it comes to removing the tire for repair in the case of a flat. ALWAYS make sure you remove the valve stem from the tire before you attempt to remove the lock ring. This way you know all the air is out and no chance of a ring blowing off while disasembley. This happened to a young kid where I work. Fork lift had a flat and he removed the wheel and figured since it was flat there was no air in it. When he started to remove the lock ring she blew with just enough force to relieve him of 7 bottom teeth and a bunch of stiches in his lower jaw. He was lucky that was all. So even a small amount of air left in the tire can be dangerous. REMOVE THE VALVE STEM.
