My Dad was a Firefighter/EMT back home (just retired this year)and in about 98 there was an accident at a local tire store where the guy had started at setting the bead on a larger split ring wheel. All they could figure is that he did not have the ring on properly and was not paying attention while airing it up and let it get over pressure. The ring blew with him over it and ripped him from about the bottom of the rib cage to the shoulder leaving his arm partially attached. Unfortunately this accident caused his death. Dad said that there was no cage, and the man had taken no safety precautions while working with this tire. The investigation concluded with the findings that the ring had been improperly installed (from a large gouge in the ring) and pressures above 100lbs were involved using witness testimony (his body was thrown almost 10 feet in the air). I always keep this in mind when I work on these wheels. I always flip the rim over with the ring down and since I have the long flexible stems, I fill them from the back while bolted town to the machine.
