There is a program (MI-HEAP...Middle Income Home Energy Assistance Program) in our county that allows people with limited income the chance to buy heating oil at a discount, or even qualify for free oil.

Since my wife was laid off from her job, and I am on a fixed retirement income and we have two kids, I figured I'd get back some of that money I've been paying into the system since I started working on the books 50 years ago, at the age of 12. I checked the income vs household persons ratio, and discovered we qualify. So I sent in the application.

Today we got a denial letter. The reason for the denial is that our income is too low to qualify. The program is only for Middle Income citizens. We are considered not to be Middle Income. We are just at the poverty level, according to their standards, so we don't get to reap the awards that Middle Income people get.

Don't ya just love this country?
