Mike, I just went and checked all of the WDX-WM300 wheels I have. Here is what I find:

1) My '47 WDX has 5 original date coded wheels.

2) Its mounted wheels have all four lock rings with 1/32 to 3/32 clearance at the lock ring gap.

3) As for the currently mounted spare, I can not see the lock ring, but it is not originally from ta truck I own anyway.

4) My '51 B3PW has 5 original date coded wheels.

5) Two of the mounted wheels on this truck have lock rings with a gap of 1/16" and 3/32" respectively.

6) The other two mounted lock rings have no gap. The ends of the rings are touching.

8) The original '47 spare is apart and in bad shape.

7) The original '51 spare is apart. Its outer finish looked really bad from storage in a wet environment, but its internal surfaces look NOS.

8) The '47 date coded wheels show no numbers on the outer surface of the lock rings. They are in really good condition.

9) The '51 date coded wheels all show the same following numbers on the outer surface:

6.50H-16
GY-LTS (followed by a cryptic symbol)

Can I assume that the two wheels on the '51 that have lock ring ends touching need to be dismantled and the lock rings switched between the two?

By looking at the nice disassembled '51 wheel, it looks like more gap at the lock ring ends would mean that the ring is about ready to pop off. From what I see, it looks like very little or no gap at the ring ends means that the ring is collapsed as far as it can go on the rim and fully seated. Rust between the rim and ring would only cause the gap at the ring ends to be greater. Is not less better?

Trying my best to understand and get to the bottom of this.

When I last had new tires mounted on these trucks, I told old the tire guy (the guy actually doing the work, not the kid behind the counter) that under no circumstances was he to mix up the rims and rings. He looked at me like he was going to deck me. I realized I had insulted him. I would not want to accuse him of mixing up two rings on purpose. They must have been this way from a previous mounting.

Again, what should I watch for the next time they change tires and I stay there to supervise. I am not finding any other numbers than those I listed above.

Junior
