No gap is bad. 1/4-3/8 is usual.

No gap might mean that the ends are hitting, keeping the ring from seating all the way. At a 1/16", i I'd say you are good to go.

But it is the bead of the tire that keeps the ring in it's groove. They can't just come apart once properly assembled and aired up. At that point, there is about 10,000 pounds holding the bead against the ring, and the ring into it's groove.
