Air Force M37/M43 light switch modification?

Here's something to ponder on a snowy day. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this or knows its purpose. My ex-AF M43 has a slot cut in the panel next to the steering column (part way into one of the data plates) that's the right size to mount an ordinary wall-mount light switch like you have in your house. It also has the holes above and below it for the screws. I figured this was just some g-job some previous civilian owner had put in, but then I got an M37 parts truck this summer that has the same modification, and it still has the switch in the hole (not hooked up to anything). The curious thing is that it was originally an Air Force truck too.

This is a really strange way to add a switch, since you have to cut a rectangular hole rather than just drilling a round hole for a normal toggle switch. The M37 that still has the switch in the hole proves that it was for a house-type light switch. The fact that they're both in the same place makes me think it was an authorized modification. Having it on both an M37 and an M43 means it wasn't for any special ambulance feature.

I'm just curious if anyone else has seen this or knows what it was for.
