Hi Jim,
Not emotional at all and I don't snipe, bid high enough and you don't have to snipe. I do bid by proxy and if my bid is high enough it will be the winning bid and if not.... = ). Buy it now works well too.
On auctions without that option, I like to monitor the auction to see how many bids, how much interest there is and how high the bids are going and how early. That info will tell a buyer a lot of what to expect in the closing minutes for a valuable or rare item. Just hate to invest the time and then see the bid pulled because of a backroom deal. I don't see a once a day visit as being obsessive, just good common sense. Often there may be more than one auction going simultaneously for the same item, so it can get complicated, I do want one, but don't need three...
I'm not making any judgment about your technique or ethics, just answering your comments as to why. There are two sides to the issue, maybe 3 if you consider the reasons that ebay is upset, which has more to do with their profit margin than their ethics....= ).
