I am also tired of Ebay but for different reasons primarily paypal fees but thats a different topic. I have purchased over 100 different items on EBAY most being expensive hard to find items for aircraft and collector vehicles and I will tell you that game playing with the local sales thing immediately removes that piece from my consideration. It is a great big red flag!!
If you really are interested in selling something to serious purchasers dont jerk people around. Always list a phone number where people can speak with you directly. This tells me that the seller wants to discuss the finer points of the product and all the important details can be worked out before the auction ends. As far as bid sniping just proxy bid your top dollar and let it ride. Nothing wrong with someone paying more than you are willing to!!
Most auctions that I win I have bid early in the auction and never upped my bid.
Also use the Buy it now, it creates a sense of urgency on the bidding side. Price the item realistically though or it will work against you!
