Fuel float doesn't

Thought I'd try to fix yet another fuel sender this evening, and did the usual bit of soldering all the parts together that had bad connections. However when I stuck the sender back in the tank, I noticed that the float promptly sank. It's a cork float. Is it possible to rejuvenate it? I hate to cannibalize a good sender just to get the cork off of it, and a wine cork is way too small. I suppose I could solder up some intricate little thing out of some thin copper sheet I have, but that seems like a lot of work. What's the usual fix for a water-logged (gas-logged?) fuel sender float?
