If you needle bounces back and forth it means that the speedo cable is sticking. The old lubrication has failed. All it needs is lubrication.

Disconnect from the spedo and pull the center drive cable from the cable. Before you actually pull the inner cable check how far it sticks out of the housing, you need to get it back to the same position when you reinstall it. Wipe it down with WD40 to clean it very well. When clean you can lubricate it with a good light grease such as a white lithium or a silicon grease.

When you put the cable back into the housing, push it all the way in then push and twist so that it will pop into the drive. Get it back to its original position that younoted above.

This worked like a charm for my 51 PW the needle is steady as a rck now.
