Anything's possible. Obviously, you want to get the timing set right. As for the hesitation, have you looked to see that the accelerator pump is working? Just look down in the carb and work the throttle. You should see gas squirt in. Every one of my old rigs needed a new accelerator pump, which usually means buying a carb rebuild kit just to get the pump. There's also usually an adjustment on the pump linkage to control the size of the "squirt". Maybe it needs to be set a little higher. Not sure about your rig, but most of them don't have a vacuum advance on the distributor, which means that even if everything is set up fine, it won't have quite the pep of a rig with a vacuum advance when you first open the throttle.
