Currently in the U.S. there is an excess plant capacity of around 3 million passenger vehicles.

There is nothing that can be done to correct the imblance except for shuttering these facilities.

A better solution to the "bailout" would be consolidation of the "Big 3" into the "Moderate 1".

Still, erosion of the auto industry segment of the economy is going to continue with the prospect of continuing higher energy costs, stagnant wages for most American workers and the decline of equity in housing.

The pretense that there is a free lunch has ended.

What we, as a nation, need to concentrate on is investing in the technologies that will propel the American economy in the decades to come and make sure that we have a substantial lead in those areas.

Those displaced auto workers would be better employed in the manufacture of GEN IV Nuclear power generating plants.
