Thanks for that info. I guess a lot of heat shields just got lost over the years, maybe partly because the aftermarket fuel pumps don't have the screw on top to attach them to. I also wonder if the modern expedient of using a rubber fuel hose and putting an in-line fuel filter in it upstream of the fuel pump contributes to vapor lock. Perhaps the combination absorbs more radiated heat than the original metal fuel lines shielded by the metal coil "spring" did. I've never had a problem with vapor lock on any rig, but I've always lived where it's pretty cold.
