I went by a scrap yard in a small town last week and they had a sign up that said that due to low steel prices, they were now charging $10/ton to accept scrap. And that's if you deliver it to their yard. What a difference a year makes.

Things are even starting to look rough here in the mining camp. The Rock Creek mine on the Clark Fork and the Teck Cominco operation at Metaline falls are both shutting down, and Hecla has stopped work on the new shaft they were sinking at the Lucky Friday. The Sunshine has been down since Sterling went T/U. The Galena (US Silver) and Hecla are still running for now. Every house in town that was for sale last year is still for sale this year.

When you have people listing their houses for $200K-$300K, and then there's another perfectly good house in the same neighborhood that the guy's been asking $40K for since summer with no takers, one has to wonder what the high-priced sellers have been smoking. For now, things are still good, but it's like we're perched on the edge of a cliff. If the mines go down, all we have left for income are the rich retired Californians -- and a lot of them are the ones who are trying to unload their houses for what they paid for them during the boom.
