I think Clint's point was that guys are often quick to put on an electric fuel pump and an aftermarket filter as a quick fix without taking the time to figure out what's really wrong (like a cruddy fuel tank, perhaps, or a fuel pump with a cracked diaphragm). If somebody thinks the stock truck needs to be modified or modernized to get it to run as well is it probably did when it was new, they're missing something. Along with electric fuel pumps, electronic ignitions and 1-wire alternators are also things that guys tend to throw on out of frustration when they can't figure out what's really wrong.
Improving a truck so it can do things it couldn't do when new is one thing, but putting a band-aid on a problem that could be fixed with only a little thought and effort is another.
