Use that lever to un lock the spool for paying out lots of cable.

Use the PTO lever in the cab, in conjunction with the normal clutch, to control actual operation. 'Forward' on the pto lever means the truck will pull itself forward, backward is well, you get that part.

The cable should come off of the bottom of the spool.

Always throw a coat or blanket over the middle of the cable- it will slow down a whipping cable/if it breaks.

If you have to pull stumps, run the chain over the stump so you sort of roll the stump out of the ground. It will also pull against only half of the roots at a time.

If you need to pull yourself out, and there is no anchor within reach, bury your spare. You'll need to dig a trench at least as deep as the tire is tall, you want the tire standing up, whole thing beneath the ground. Dig that trench perpendicular to the cable, and another trench for the cable that will hook to the center of the rim. Bury everything, tightly. Pull your self out, use winch plus lowest gear. Continue winding in the cable, right up until you pull the tire straight up out of the ground.

Don't go any where off road without a real shovel. And big blocks, and a high lift jack and extra chain, and all the cable you can get ahold of and....

A book could be written about winch operation, this will get you started.
