Old dried gas can leave deposits, you may need to clean out the carb.

And my pet peeve is folks who cut the steel lines to add a filter. They usually use a hack saw or dikes to cut the line, leaving ragged ends that shred the inside of the rubber hoses. Pieces shaved off can either hold the inlet fitting open, leading to flooding, or plug the main jet, leading to leanness probs.

I like to oil my carb gaskets as I reassemble- it keeps the gaskets from sticking and breaking on subsequent repairs, saving on gaskets/kits.
