I experimented on the neighborhood streets before I took the M37 for its long trip. Nothing short of tying the wheel solidly in place was dependable. Since I was pulling with a 2WD pickup, I also made sure I had enough weight in the pickup to outweigh the M37, so that the M37 wouldn't just push the pickup's rear end sideways on corners.

I did flat-tow a couple of M35s (using another M35 as the tow vehicle) without tying the wheel, and it traced fine except when I turned sharp on a rough gravel lot and caught the wheels on some bumps. Of course an M35 has 8 wheels pointing straight ahead and only two trying to turn, and its turning radius is much wider, so that makes a difference.

In general, I like as few variables as possible on a trip like that, so I'd rather have the wheel rigidly tied and not have to worry about anything sudden and unexpected happening, even though it means some additional tire wear and perhaps reduced fuel economy and turning radius.
