Flat towing as you said is not really advisable for larger vehicles. They tend to steer the towing vehicle.

I flat towed my 51 PW when I bought it. We towed it about 10 miles. I did have a friend in the cab of the PW (it was legal at the time). He helped steer it. A couple of times he turned the wheel just to give me a bad time. He could really control my Scout which was towing. The Scout was not sufficient in weight to contol the load being towed.

I also flat towed my Carryall about 10 miles when I picked it up. This time I towed with the 51 PW. Again it was very difficult to tow. It wanted to control the 51 PW. Turns were difficult to say the least as the Carryall did not want to turn. I ended up making very wide turns because of that.

I do not flat tow any more. True I have a trailer and I bought it because I wanted to be safe even on short tows. It has been well worth the cost. Rentals around here are non existent you can not find anything that will carry more that a mid-size car. That is why I ended up buying my own.

Actually, it would be a good time to buy a trailer from either a dealer or private party. Dealers need to reduce inventory and some people need to get rid of their toys. I bought mine from a dealer several years back. I got it for $1 a pound. He had had it on his lot for 2 years. Great trailer but he did not have the clientel that were interested. It is more of an equipment trailer rather than a car trailer.

Most tow dollys are not big enough to tow anything but small vehicles. However, I recently saw a larger one that worked on trucks and was big enough. That would give you brakes also.
