Well I connected the ground and it does not work. Shows 0.0 for hours and nothing else.

I did take the battery out. It still shows 3.0 volts. It looks like there are two tiny spot welds that attach each terminal to the battery. You can get them apart but it springs the terminals out. Turns out this is not a problem. I put the battery back in can with both terminals bent up and away from their location, you can put the battery back in and use the back of the black box to push it all back together. So it "works" just like it did when I took it apart.

It would be worth trying to replace the battery but I would not be suprised if the operation is not always successful.
