by lockers, i should have said limited slip (usually enough but admittedly not as good as an arb locker) and by benefits, higher strength and better ratios would be available. i would imagine that 70s would complete a full conversion package like paul in ny did nicely. modern but tuff parts end to end. it seems that out of necessity, we have created workarounds on every part of the stock axle assembly through mods - disc brakes, lockouts, gear swaps, stronger axle shafts etc. stock 70s with the correct ratios and limited slips in the rear would be cost effective vs 489s, helitool discs, foote axles, bearings & seals, etc.

it would be worth hearing from frank irons about the process anyway. after you do lockers, gears, discs & possible upgrade shafts you have over 1000 for an arb, 700 for gears, 500 for discs, 1000 for shafts 300 for misc parts = 3500 approx + or minus. thats really close to a full blown custom made axle assembly with machined ends and modified hubs to accept our stock wheels. food for thought. im happy with stock axles under my command car with helitool discs and 489s. if i did it again, i would have skipped the 489s and done new 1100x16 radials instead to get the gearing advantage.
