The early powerwagons until '56 were non synchromesh standard transmissions. Easy enough to upshift, but required true mastery to down shift. Down shifting required couble clutching...depress the clutch to pull the gear selector out of gear, then blip the throttle to bring the revs up, depress the clutch and down shift. When accompanied without the garish grinding of gears, you have succeeded.
Having said that, I NEVER got the hang of downshifting in the 8 years before I replaced the transmission with a synchromesh NP 435.
The standard H pattern had the following pattern:
1st 3rd

2nd 4th Reverse
