I do find that for example my mechanic who works on all makes says that in general they see less problems with Toyotas.

I have owned a Toyota, and it was pretty reliable, though it ate one specific exhaust pipe yearly. My friends own Toyotas, and Hondas, and they need little to no work compared to other friends with Fords, GMs, etc. On the other hand, I have two friends with 1996-97 Toyota Camrys, both higher mileage 160,000-200,000, and they are falling apart. There is no hard and fast rule, but you can make generalizations to narrow the search for a reliable car.

I ask questions, do research, etc before I make a point. The Consumer Reports scans were just a simple visual way to show the average differences between one car maker and another.

Are you saying that Consumer Reports skews the data against the domestic makers? And then they go around fixing all my friends Toyotas while they sleep?

How about recall data? Since you work with the automotive repair industry, show us a link to all the recalls by maker, who has more serious recalls (bad wiring, brake problems, suspension problems, etc)? Wouldn't you want to buy from the company with the lowest number of recalls per car?

I would like to see $25,000,000,000 of my countries tax dollars be used wisely, and so far I have not seen a plan that makes me want to approve that kind of bailout to the big 3, whether it be a loan, or straight cash gift.

Eric
