I think the big 3 have put themselves in this problem after so many years of building gas guzzlers that spent too much time in the shop, but over the past few years I have also noticed a huge improvement in their products. It would be such a shame to see them this close to doing it right then be allowed to die.
There is a bigger picture here. I am from Canada and we are having the same problems as in the U.S.
The auto industry is just the writing on the wall. We are losing our industrial base to quick profits. Cheaper wages in other parts of the world are driving our companies out of North America where companies can make bigger profits. Our standard of living is falling very rapdily and I am not sure we can turn it around. The rich will get richer, but the middle class is going to have to do some quick thinking if they want to survive. I am not totally sold on the "Free world trade concept". It will only help certain individuals. I don't think we should let our big three die on the vine, but it won't matter because eventually all our auto's will be made overseas.
