In fairness to the auto makers, they build what customers buy.
In spite of the lip service about wanting smaller fuel efficient cars, Americans still demanded SUV's and pickups which despite the cost of fuel STILL account for 50% of vehicle sales.
And don't think Japan is immune, look at the new trucks from Japan, Full size Nissan's and Tundras, Toyota has 7-9 SUV models...
There is a forest and there are trees, we seemed to be blinded by both...
You hear ads for the Tahoe's right now because they are drowning in them and they do not have to advertise the best selling Malibu or Cobalt.
