Like on the flat head sixes, that little hole in the back of the pump. Or many motors use the heater hose system as the bypass, that's why they don't have heater control valves in those systems.

I thought the spacer was a pretty nice way to surmount that challenge.

A hole saw in a drill press will cut aluminum AND steel pretty nice. Pre-drill the 1/4" pilot hole. Then run the hole saw on lowest speed, and back it out and brush the chips out of the teeth very often, or it will stop cutting when the teeth get plugged. Most guys will just push harder, and friction will melt the chips into the teeth, and burn up the saws. Lube aluminum with candle wax, WD-40 or kerosene. Or heating oil?
