My own laminectomy was to L-5. It was shortly after Reagan was shot. And my Dr. did the same trick as Reagan's doctors did- before sewing things up, squirt in some anesthetic. The plan was to keep the local tissues from ever being in pain, and so they wouldn't flame-up. Sure worked for me, woke in the recovery room, legs felt warm and fine. No pain meds at all for the three day hospital stay. But may have been just the surgery pain was like nuthin compared to the the sciatica, which was soooo bad I was limping. That calf is still 1" smaller than the other, 22 years later.
