They have made it so an inexperienced and non mechanical person can look up a part and pull it off the shelf and have no clue what they just sold you. They do not want to pay for the experience behind the counter.

But I like it when I walk in to a parts place with the needed part in hand. The person behind the counter regonizes the part and walks back to the shelf and brings me a new part without looking it up. There was a guy in town here that could do that quite often. Also I could state that I need the clutch slave cylinder for a 65 Chevy truck and it would be on the counter in just a minute or two. He was never wrong. Unfortunately they laided him off when the that chain took over another chain store and they were closing one of the stores in town.

Now I walk in and say i need something for the engine in my carryall and they ask for the model, year and vin. I tell them it is a 65 Chevy 327 from a Maibu and they are totally lost. They ask for the vin again and I say I do not have it and they say can't help you. I simply reply yes you can but you are too lazy to work it out.

I went into a NAPA store about a year ago with a burned out heater motor. Same VIN question. Don't have it I said. He immedialy pulled a book with motor listings. We made a couple of quick measurements on my motor and we were off to the races. The next day I picked up the new motor. An exact fit. That is what you need from a parts house.
