Setting the timing on my 230 motor 57PWFF

I bought a new timer. So my first time timing any thing. I have it set up and I see the marks on the front pully. but i do not know how the scale works. Is the tap dead center is that the middle of the scale? Where are you suppost to veiw the timing light from? Look staight down on to the pointer or off from the side?
