You could set type each letter at a time and that went on the press. You had to put the pieces of type back in the case when you were done. We had to learn the california job case by memory as every piece of type had thier own place. A common place no matter what shop you were in. The cast type which is probably what your brass type is was actually put in a "stick" and then put into a casting machine like a Ludlow or Linotype and a word or sentence would be cast and come out at one big piece. You had to put the type away when you were done casting. When the job was finished being printed you could remelt the old sticks of type and recycle. This was a good way to do it as the old type was tied up until the job was done. This way you could cast a sentence or paragraph and reuse the type for another job and get it ready to go to press. These casting machines would have a crucible and keep the molten metal liquid all the time. It was made of lead, tin and antimony.
