I agree with the rusted parts reacting to heat well. I believe it is because of the reduction in volume of the rust in the space between the two parts. heat causes the parts to expand, forcing the rust/etc. to be compacted greatly, therefore loosening the joint. That rust came from the thread areas, so they will be thinner/weaker causing them to strip easy.
