Did you remove the metal dowel pins ( three or so if I recall correctly) that keep the carrier cap from coming off? I think these caps are put on with very high torque. I thought it may be around 1000 foot pounds. I had to use a holding fixture and a home made tool on a long pipe. I had to use all my weight and strike the pie with a large rubber mallet. And.....I did do the heat. I have an old oven in the shop. I baked at the 400 + degrees or so for well over an hour. For my set up the carrier was bolted to the holding fixture (an old ring gear welded to a pipe section)while being baked. I used welding gloves (and several layers of cloths)to handle getting the hot mess onto the rest of my holding fixture (a pipe in the shop floor that the pipe welded to the ring gear slides over). The heat makes the case grow a little and relieves some of the interference fit.
