Rick,
I live on the Eastern Shore of VA. When I redid part of my stable, my 4x6's salt treated were completely rotted through. The beams were probably in the ground 16 years. They were subject to horse urine and termites. One 4x6 I exposed, I was able to knock a hole through it with one blow of the hammer. What I do now is put roof tar on the bottom of the beam up to were it will be sticking out of the soil. Then encase the bottom in cement making sure I even have cement under the bottom of the beam. So the beam is isolated from mosture and bugs from the tar and cement. It takes time and effort. If you do the tar, make sure you get a thin tar. It will make brushing it on easier. Good luck.
Dave
