Someone might correct me, because I'm not an expert, but I believe the 12 valve and the 24 valve are both 5.9L, including the new HO (High Output) starting in '03. The 12 valve is not run by computers. You can modify the injectors and the injector pump. You can change the fuel plate, governor spring, etc. You can only modify the 24 valve engines with electronics.
For instance, I put in a new fuel plate for $150 and adjusted the pump a little, and got a tremendous boost in low end and passing acceleration.
