Bought my old smoking Poly in '77, 10 year old engine. Ran lousy, smoked bad at startup, blowby, fuel odor, ran better cold than hot. After talking to another mechanic I pulled valve covers and cleaned out the oil drainback holes at lower outer corners of heads. About .38 cal 'cause I used a gun brush, tight fit. Years of Penzoil left a pile of charcoal on top of heads and clogged drain holes. Oil was pooling on top of heads then leaking past umbrella seals and causing blowby, plus draining into cylinders overnite to have a nice cloud waiting on startup.

As engine warmed it slowly lowered crankcase oil level.

Adjusted valves, hot with engine running. Trick there is to warm engine, pull valve covers, loosen all adjuster locknuts. Re-start, turn idle down to where engine barely runs, about 400-500 rpms. Hardly any oil sloshing that way, and slow enough to easily set lash with engine running, most accurate setting because pushrods rotate. Set all, then shutdown and snug adjuster nuts while holding screw setting.

Later found a bad fuel pump was dumping fuel in the oil, part of the fuel rich smell while running, diluting oil, and with the steadily lowering oil level from clogged drains engine suffered when warm! Poor old thing was stout, ran 13 more years.
