Bret to my thinking if the compression is good and even it should run decent> meaning valves are in the correct position and things are sealing> even if the oil rings are letting oil past there would be oil smoke out the exhaust ,but run smooth> but if you crossed a wire or have mixed 5 and 7 which are close it will run cold with the mixture richer as it leans ,when warm the spark is not timed and Pressure from ignition will travel else were ie intake or exhaust because igintion is not at or near tdc and the gasses, upset, the performance suffers but will run and crank pressure pressure is high and looks like blow by this is a long shot but i would cover the basics be fore i pulled any thing ~ j
