When the financial world is going down the drain, sometimes it's smarter to get out while the getting is good than wait until you've lost everything. I just got done waiting for my Washington Mutual stock to turn around and go back up. I should have gotten out when I'd only lost half my money, instead of waiting until I lost 99% of it.
I used to have a certificate for one share of "Star Motor Company". My grandfather's brother bought it in 1929 when he was logging for Weyerhaeuser in Oregon. He said all the other loggers were talking about how they were making money in the stock market, especially in all these new automobile companies, and you couldn't go wrong. So he bought a share. Too bad he picked Star Motors instead of the Dodge Brothers.
