The Oil vs. Gold hedge is sound. However.....these move in opposite directions because of changes in the value of the US dollar. Oil went through the roof, the dollar slid as a result, and people flocked to gold as a result of that.

Works while the economy is clicking along.

What happens however, if the economy stalls? US consumers buy less, oil goes down. US consumers buy less, global production suffers and MAYBE gold goes down too.

Your friend did you a great service telling you to get out of the market early. Now, go buy some certificates of deposit.
