My cousin is now retired, but was the senior engineer for Union Pacific and I asked him about the 'Big Boy' at the Forney Museum in Denver. He drove it on it's final trip from Cheyenne to the museum. I've seen it and it is a block long. The Engineer station is one story off the ground. 2 boilers powering 2 sets of 8 wheels and the boilers are fed by conveyour from the huge coal car. Humongus!
A great uncle was killed in a head-on train wreck near Broomfield in the 50's. I never new him, but now know his daughter and family.
